Islamic Inheritance Calculator (Wirasat) - Calculate Property Distribution As Per Islam
Islamic inheritance distribution follows specific shares for family members. In Islam, the distribution of property after someone passes away is a matter that needs great care. It is not decided by personal wishes alone, but by clear principles given in the Holy Quran and Sunnah. This is called Wirasat or Ilm-ul-Meerath.
My Islamic Inheritance Calculator (Wirasat) helps you estimate how the property of a deceased person is divided among his or her legal heirs according to Islamic principles. It is based on the simplified Hanafi school of thought which is followed by the majority of Muslims in Pakistan. It is fast, private, and easy to use for initial understanding.
Who Inherits and How Much: The Basics
Wirasat is the Islamic law of inheritance that defines who will receive a share from the property of a person who has passed away and how much each heir will get. In Pakistan, inheritance for Muslims is governed under the Muslim Personal Law.
Unlike other systems where a person can will his entire property to anyone, in Islam there are fixed shares (Faraiz) for certain heirs. These shares are clearly defined and cannot be changed. For example, the share of a wife, mother, father, and daughters is fixed in the Quran.
The remaining property after giving fixed shares is distributed among the residuary heirs, such as sons, who receive the remainder. A key principle in Islamic inheritance is that a son gets double the share of a daughter.
This calculator is made to give you a quick and clear estimate for common family situations in Pakistan.
How Does This Islamic Inheritance Calculator Work?
This calculator uses a simplified Hanafi method for calculation. It follows the standard fixed shares defined in Islamic law for immediate family members.
Here is how the basic shares work in this simplified model:
1. Wife's Share: If the deceased has children, the wife gets 1/8 (12.5%) of the total estate. If there are no children, the wife gets 1/4 (25%). If there is more than one wife, they share this portion equally.
2. Mother's Share: If the deceased has children, or two or more siblings, the mother gets 1/6. Otherwise she gets 1/3 (or 1/3 of what remains after a spouse's share when both parents and a spouse survive). This tool does not include siblings, so please check with a local scholar for final shares.
3. Father's Share: If the deceased has children, the father gets 1/6 (16.67%) as a fixed share. In some cases, he may also get the remaining property as a residuary heir if there is no son.
4. Daughter's Share: If there is only one daughter and no son, she gets 1/2 (50%). If there are two or more daughters and no son, they share 2/3 (66.67%) equally. If there are sons and daughters together, they become residuary heirs and the sons get twice the share of the daughters.
5. Sons: Sons are residuary heirs (Asaba). After giving fixed shares to the wife, mother, and father, whatever is left from the estate is distributed among sons and daughters in the ratio of 2:1, meaning each son gets double the share of each daughter.
The calculator first deducts and then distributes the remaining estate according to these rules.

Common Mistakes in Wirasat Calculation
Inheritance is a sensitive matter, so you must be careful to avoid mistakes.
1. Clear Debts and Funeral Expenses First: In Islam, inheritance distribution comes after three steps: paying for funeral expenses, paying off all debts of the deceased, and fulfilling any valid will up to one-third of the estate. Many people make the mistake of distributing the total property directly without clearing debts first, which is not correct.
2. Get Legal Documents: For official ownership and transfer of property, bank accounts, and vehicles in Pakistan, you need to obtain a Legal Heirs Certificate or Succession Certificate from NADRA or from the relevant court. This certificate officially declares who the legal heirs are.
3. Family Cases Can Be Very Complex: This calculator covers the most common family members - wife, sons, daughters, father, and mother. However, in real life, there are often many other heirs like brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, and in case of a deceased wife, the husband's share is different. Each family situation can be different and may require detailed calculation.
Important Shariah Points About Property Distribution
Islamic inheritance law (Ilm-ul-Meerath) is a deep and detailed science. This tool provides a simplified estimate for common cases based on the Hanafi school of thought. It does not cover all possible heirs and complex situations such as the presence of full brothers and sisters, paternal or maternal siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, or when the deceased is a wife.
This tool applies Aul and Radd for the heirs it supports.
Therefore, for the final and legally binding distribution of property, especially for valuable assets, you should always consult a qualified Islamic scholar (Aalim) who is an expert in Meerath and also consult a qualified lawyer or the relevant court for legal implementation.
What This Calculator Does Not Cover
This calculator covers common cases: wife, mother, father, sons, daughters. It does not cover complex cases like grandchildren, brothers, sisters, or when parents are not alive but grandparents are. Those cases need detailed Fiqh opinion. I use simplified Hanafi rules for general understanding.
