How the Grading System Works in the USA

Almost every high school and university in the United States, including top institutions like Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and UCLA, uses the 4.0 grading scale. In this system, each letter grade you receive is converted into a grade point.

Here is the standard grading scale used across the USA:

The Formula to Calculate GPA in the USA

Calculating GPA in the US is based on credit hours. Each course you take has a certain number of credit hours. The calculation involves two steps.

First, you calculate Quality Points for each course. Quality Points are calculated by multiplying the grade point of your course by the credit hours of that course. For example, if you get an A, which is 4.0, in a 3-credit course, your quality points will be 12.

Second, you calculate your final GPA. You add all your quality points from all courses and divide them by the total number of credit hours you have taken. This gives you your semester GPA. My calculator performs this entire process automatically for you.

What is the Difference Between Weighted and Unweighted GPA?

This matters a lot for US high school students.

Unweighted GPA: This is the traditional GPA measured on a 4.0 scale. In this system, no matter how difficult your course is, the highest grade point you can get is 4.0. Most colleges look at this GPA.

Weighted GPA: This system is measured on a 5.0 scale. It is made to reward students who take more challenging courses like Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors classes. In a weighted system, an A in a regular class is still 4.0, but an A in an AP class is worth 5.0 points. This is why some students have a GPA higher than 4.0. My calculator supports both weighted and unweighted calculations.

What is Considered a Good GPA in the USA?

Your academic goals will define what a good GPA is for you.

A GPA between 3.0 and 3.4 is considered a good GPA. With this GPA, you can get admission to many good state universities in the US.

A GPA between 3.5 and 3.9 is considered very good. This GPA makes you eligible for merit-based scholarships and competitive for top 50 universities.

A 4.0 GPA is considered excellent. You will need a GPA close to 4.0 to get into Ivy League universities like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.

How to Use My USA GPA Calculator?

Select the letter grade and credit hours for each course. Click Add Course for more courses. Click Convert to see your 4.0 GPA.

Many US high schools use weighted GPA for honors and AP classes, where an A in an AP course can be worth 5.0 points. However, most colleges recalculate it to a standard unweighted 4.0 scale during admissions to keep the evaluation fair for all applicants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How is college GPA calculated with credit hours in the USA?

In the US system, each grade has a point value. Your grade points are multiplied by the credit hours of that course. The total grade points of all courses are then divided by total credit hours to get your final GPA.

Q2. What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA in US high schools?

Unweighted GPA is measured on a standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra points for difficult courses like AP or Honors, and can go up to 5.0. Most universities look at both to understand your academic strength.

Q3. How do I convert my percentage to a 4.0 GPA for US universities?

Generally, 90% to 100% is considered 4.0, 80% to 89% is around 3.0 to 3.9, and 70% to 79% is 2.0 to 2.9. You can select your letter grades in this calculator to get an estimate.

Q4. Can I use this calculator for both high school and college?

Yes. This calculator works for both. High school students can use it without credit hours or with equal credits, while college students can add the credit hours for each course to get an estimate.
