How to Count Characters and Words for Forms in Pakistan
Last updated: 15 October 2026 | Reviewed by Habiba, founder of PakCalculators.com
Counting characters and words is important when you apply for jobs, write a university personal statement, or post on social media with a limit. The result depends on how you count, so it helps to know the common methods.
In Pakistan, most online forms, like PPSC or university admission portals, count spaces as characters. This is why my Character Counter shows two results, one with spaces and one without. It gives you a clear idea so you can stay within the limit mentioned in the form.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
One common mistake is copying text directly from MS Word or Google Docs. These editors often add hidden line breaks, which increases the character count. Always paste your text first in a simple text editor.
A second mistake is thinking that Urdu and English are counted differently. My tool counts each letter, whether Urdu or English, as one character. This is the method generally followed by local portals.
A third mistake is counting only visible words and ignoring punctuation. Commas and full stops are also characters in many forms.
Worked Example 1
Sentence: "I love Pakistan"
Words: 3
Characters without spaces: 13
Characters with spaces: 15
If a form allows 15 characters, this sentence will be accepted.
Worked Example 2 - Real Use Case
You write for a scholarship form: "I completed my FSC from BISE Lahore in 2024 with 1050 marks. I want to study Computer Science."
My tool shows:
Words: 18
Characters with spaces: 94
Characters without spaces: 77
You can now easily adjust it to fit a 100-character limit.
When Not to Use This Tool
Do not use this for scanned documents or images. It only works for typed or pasted text. For legal affidavits, follow the counting method mentioned by the court or lawyer.
Tips for Staying Under a Limit
Remove extra spaces and blank lines before you count. Check both counts, with spaces and without spaces, and compare them with the rule written on the form. Some forms may count a line break differently, so count again after you paste your final text into the form.
Remember that characters and words are different limits. A word limit counts groups of letters, while a character limit counts every letter, number, space and punctuation mark.
