How to Calculate GPA and CGPA in Pakistan (4.0 Scale)

In Pakistani universities like Punjab University, UET, FAST, NUST, GPA system is used.

What is GPA and CGPA?

GPA = Grade Point Average for one semester. CGPA = Cumulative GPA for all semesters.

Formula

GPA = Sum of (Credit Hours x Grade Points) / Sum of Credit Hours

CGPA = Sum of (Total GPA points of all semesters) / Total Credit Hours

Grade Points in Pakistan (4.0 Scale)

My calculator uses this scale: A = 4.00, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.00, B- = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.00, C- = 1.67, D+ = 1.33, D = 1.00, F = 0.00. Percentage ranges for each grade differ by university, so check your own handbook. This scale helps you estimate your GPA.

Pakistani Example

Example: A student at University of Punjab.

Course 1: 3 credits, Grade A (4.0) = 12 points

Course 2: 3 credits, Grade B (3.0) = 9 points

Total = 21 points / 6 credits = 3.5 GPA.

How to Use My GPA Calculator Pakistan

Enter credit hours and grade points for each course. Click Add Course to add up to 20 courses. If you have previous CGPA, enter it. Click Calculate GPA. It will show GPA and CGPA. Check your university handbook for the exact grade table.

Common GPA Mistakes

The first mistake is averaging semester GPAs directly. A semester with 18 credit hours should count more than one with 12, so CGPA must be calculated from total grade points divided by total credit hours.

The second mistake is using the wrong credit hours. Enter the credit hours printed on your transcript, not the number of lectures per week.

The third mistake is applying another university's grade table. A grade may carry different points in different universities, so confirm your own university's handbook, including its rules for repeated or withdrawn courses.

Another Worked Example

Example: A student takes four courses.

Course 1: 3 credits, Grade A (4.00) = 12.00 points

Course 2: 3 credits, Grade B+ (3.33) = 9.99 points

Course 3: 4 credits, Grade A- (3.67) = 14.68 points

Course 4: 2 credits, Grade C (2.00) = 4.00 points

Total = 40.67 points / 12 credits = 3.39 semester GPA.

Now suppose the student had a previous CGPA of 3.20 over 60 credit hours. New CGPA = (3.20 x 60 + 40.67) / (60 + 12) = 232.67 / 72 = 3.23.

FAQ

1. Is CGPA the average of all semester GPAs?

Not exactly. CGPA uses total grade points and total credit hours, so semesters with more credit hours carry more weight.

2. Do zero credit hour courses count?

A course with zero credit hours adds zero grade points and zero hours, so it does not change the GPA in this calculator.

3. Can I use this if my university has a different scale?

This calculator uses the 4.0 scale. If your university uses a different scale, check its handbook before relying on the result.

You can avoid manual errors by checking your grades with my free GPA CGPA Calculator Pakistan that uses the common 4.0 scale.
