How to Calculate Percentage From Marks for BISE Boards
Last updated: 15 October 2026 | Reviewed by Habiba, founder of PakCalculators.com
Students in Punjab, Sindh, and KPK often need to calculate percentage for college admission. The basic formula is simple, but using the correct total marks is very important.
Formula: (Obtained Marks / Total Marks) x 100
Common Mistakes
The most common mistake is using old total marks. In most Punjab boards, total marks for Matric and Intermediate are 1100, not 1050 or 850. Many students still divide by 1050, which gives a wrong percentage. Another mistake is adding 9th and 10th marks incorrectly. You should add both years for final Matric result. Students also confuse percentage with GPA. Percentage is for board exams, GPA is for university semester system.
Worked Example 1 - Matric
Ali got 980 marks in Matric, BISE Lahore.
Total = 1100
Calculation: (980 / 1100) x 100 = 89.09%
This helps him check his college merit.
Worked Example 2 - FSC for University Merit
Habiba got 1020 in FSC Pre-Medical.
Total = 1100
Calculation: (1020 / 1100) x 100 = 92.73%
Most medical universities use this percentage for initial merit calculation.
When Not to Use This
Do not use this method for O-Level or A-Level, where grades are converted differently. Do not use it for GPA calculation. Also, if your board still follows 550 for 9th only, use 550 as total, not 1100.
Grade Bands Used by the Calculator
- 80% and above = A-One (A1)
- 70% to 79.99% = A Grade
- 60% to 69.99% = B Grade
- 50% to 59.99% = C Grade
- 40% to 49.99% = D Grade
- 33% to 39.99% = E Grade (Pass in most BISE boards)
- Below 33% = Fail
Boards can differ slightly, so confirm the bands on your own result card.
Worked Example 3 - Grade Band
A student got 745 out of 1100.
Calculation: (745 / 1100) x 100 = 67.73%, which is Grade B. Marks lost = 1100 - 745 = 355.
Combining Two Exams
To combine two exams, add the obtained marks and add the total marks first, then divide. Do not average two percentages when the total marks are different.
Example: 450 out of 550 and 520 out of 550. Percentage = (450 + 520) / (550 + 550) x 100 = 970 / 1100 x 100 = 88.18%.
